James Ensor

James Sidney Edouard Ensor (n. 13 aprilie, 1860 – November 19, 1949) este pictorul excentric si vizionar al sfarsitului de secol XIX. Pictor emblematic a avantgardei  belgiene  (asociat cu grupul de artisti Les XX ) si precursor al expresionismului, a  influenţat în mod semnificativ o serie de artisti ai  secolului 20, cum ar fi Paul Klee sau Emil Nolde, precum şi a altor expresionisti şi pictori suprarealisti.

A trăit în Ostende aproape întreaga sa viaţă, unde a pictat peisaje, naturi moarte, autoportrete  populandu-si lucrările cu măşti, schelete sau imagini grotesti si fantastice.

Chiar daca prin opera sa poate fi si realist şi impresionist, si simbolist si naturalist, si expresionist, si fov si suprarealist, Ensor se declara  străin faţă de vreun curent artistic contemporan,  refuzand  încadrarea strictă a creaţiei sale în cadrul unei singure manifestări plastice.
